What is a Mole?

A mole is composed of masses of melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells of the skin. Moles, medically called nevi, appear as depositions of pigmented cells which vary in size, shapes and colours (either brown or black) necessitating surgical removal.

Mole Removal is a quick process and can be done by surgical excision or surgical shave. Also, freezing method and laser therapy can be done. But laser therapy is not used for deep mole removal as the laser beams are not able to penetrate that deep.

Mole removal is typically a quick short procedure relatively painless.

How is the therapy done?

Moles can easily be diagnosed by the dermatologists and its removal is almost painless. It is a short time procedure and is done as an outpatient basis. Moles can be removed by two main methods. These are surgical excision and surgical shave.

Moles can be removed by:

Cutting / Excision

For mole removal requires, a local anesthetic as it involves cutting of the surrounding skin with a scalpel or surgical scissors. Some moles may have cells that have grown underneath the top layer of skin. Cutting these out may require a few stitches to close the skin, which can leave a small scar that will fade over time.

Shave removal

Some moles can be shaved down with a scalpel. The area gets numbed with a local anesthetic beforehand, and usually, only a small pink mark is left after the removal.

Laser Removal

Smaller, non-cancerous moles that don’t appear above the surface of the skin may also be removed with a laser therapy. This skin moles therapy uses strong bursts of light radiation to break down the mole cells in the skin. This method usually requires two or three sessions to get rid of the mole. While excision and cutting are the more used and recommended methods of removing moles, laser removal can be used for harder to reach areas, such as on the face or ears, and can be helpful for eliminating multiple moles at the same time.

What are the post-therapy guidelines?

After the therapy, the area should be kept clean to avoid any infections. It is also very important to wear proper sun protection (i.e. hats, protective clothing, SPF) to prevent moles from forming in the future and to prevent removed moles from returning. Monthly skin check-ups are also advised to spot any irregular moles and notice any changes in existing moles.

How long does it take to recover?

Moles can be removed instantaneously by surgical methods. But the cut or scar that it leaves behind takes a minimum of six months to merge with the skin. If the mole was pretty large in size, the scars may be left as a permanent mark on the skin.
